Neck pain

Everyone’s heard the phrase “pain in the neck”, and for good reason.

A pain in the neck can make life miserable.

Because the neck is highly flexible allowing us to move our heads in most directions, it means that the muscles, ligaments and joints can be easily injured through poor postural habits and sleeping habits, car accidents, or the over use of iphones and ipads.

Research has shown that patients with Grade I or Grade II neck pain who received spinal manipulation or mobilisation benefit with the relief of their symptoms and there was no evidence of any excess risk of stroke (Bone & Joint decade 2000-2010).

Joint Dysfunction

If a joint in your cervical spine (neck) doesn’t go through its full range of motion it can put pressure on the surrounding muscles, ligaments and nerves resulting in neck pain and tension. Chiropractic adjustments restore the normal range of motion to the cervical spine by relieving pressure on the structures surrounding the joints.

Nerve Irritation

Sometimes that joint that is not moving correctly in your neck can be putting pressure on the nerves in your neck. Sometimes you can get a sharp shooting pain into the head or into the shoulders, or down your arm causing pins and needles into the hands and fingers. Chiropractic adjustments help by removing nerve irritation and restoring correct joint movement.

Muscle Strain

Chronic poor posture, such as prolonged use of devices, can cause chronically tightened neck and shoulder muscles and shortened muscles in the front of the neck. This can lead to neck pain, referred pain into the TMJ (jaw) and ears. By restoring normal joint movement and correcting poor postural habits, Chiropractors can help with muscle strain.

Osteoarthritis

Also known as “wear and tear” and doesn’t always happen to “old” people. Osteoarthritis can come about as a result of trauma from sporting injuries and whiplash injuries to chronic spinal changes as a result of poor repetitive postural habits.

Whiplash

Neck pain that comes about following a car accident or a sporting injury that is not treated correctly can result in chronic changes to the muscles, ligaments, disc and joints later on. It is a condition that is not easily detectable with xrays or MRI but can result in joint changes later on in life. If treated early enough, Chiropractors are able to restore normal joint function thus minimising degenerative changes later in life.

Disc Bulge

An alarming cause of neck pain. Usually from a sudden rotary or shearing force to the disc, or can be caused by underlying degeneration of the joint and disc. The pain associated with disc bulges can be severe with referred pain into the shoulder or down the arm. Finding the source of the pain and restoring the joint back to its correct position will help the disc heal more effectively. If it does not respond to adjustments, we will refer you.

Headaches and Migraines

There are many causes and types of mind numbing headaches and is one of the most common reasons patients seek help from chiropractors.

Neck pain can be a cause of:

  • Cervicogenic Headaches Adjustments to the joints of the neck can relieve these types of headaches
  • Tension Headaches These types of headaches are generally caused by stress and poor posture. These resolve very well after Chiropractic adjustments with the help of postural advice and exercises.
  • Migraines Common or classic. The Chiropractors will carry out a thorough examination of the head and neck, ruling out any sinister cause for your migraines. Once we have established a possible cause for your migraines, restoring normal function will reduce the frequency and severity of your migraines.
  • Sinus Headaches Who doesn’t hate sinus headaches? All that pressure on the sinuses can be helped by sinus massages and adjusting the neck to improve the lymphatic drainage to the face and neck.
